How to prepare for English

       What to bring?
------------------------------

       In English class, you are required to bring an English:

  • Binder with dividers (Writing, Short Stories, Vocab, Language skills, Poetry, Novel Studies, Drama, and Review)
     

  • Lined paper (for writing) 
     

  • A pencil case (including pencils, erasers, rulers, coloured pens, highlighters, and Post-it notes) 

"What to keep in mind"

                              Assignment criteria:

1) Title of assignment 
2) Top right-hand corner: Full name, date, block, course
3) Written NEATLY in blue or black ink
4) Use highlighters/coloured pens to highlight
5) Most works are double spaced

     To make the most of your English course, it’s important to come prepared with the right materials, understand what teachers look for in your work, and know the key topics you’ll study throughout the year. This guide will help you get ready for class, meet the criteria for success, and feel confident about what to expect in English.

Reading:


  Materials include Short story novels, paragraphs, and chapter books
-Analyze and use context clues
-Topic sentence, main ideas, thesis, and supporting details
-Interpret and analyze ideas 

-Analyze literary devices: Irony, foreshadowing, metaphors, etc.. 

Writing:


-Provide a descriptive... description 
-learn to adapt to style, language, and tones to suit their target audience
- learn to organize both from simple paragraphs and multi-paragraphs
- learn prewriting methods to help perfect the final product; these methods are: free-writing, brainstorming, listing, and mind-mapping
- (Vocabulary) learn to evoke emotions by employing more synonyms or words with stronger connotations
-the 4 types of writing:

 

*Narrative (telling a story),

  • Fiction writing

  • Non-fiction writing

*Persuasive (to prove a point or convince someone on that point),

*Expository (inform or instruct/guide someone with a task)

Grammar(ly):
 

Materials: "Language power" book & various worksheets
- learn to use punctuation such as:
colons, semicolons, apostrophes, and hyphens correctly
- learn the basic parts of speech (you should already know this)

-learn clauses and phrases:

  • Dependent vs Independent

-Complex and compound-complex sentences​
